GPS Information / Complaints
Few products are really perfect. I have a couple of gripes with my Garmin Legend C. Here are my open comments to Garmin about my GPS:
- When you save a track on the Legend, it strips out all of the time data, removes most of the track points and only saves a fraction of what you asked it to save.
- Way point note - clear field option. This is a simple one. When editing most of the text fields on the Legend, there's a button to clear the entire field, not so when editing a waypoint note.
- Current speed limit display. This one really isn't cycling related, but it would be nice if the unit would display the speed limit on the currently traveled road.
And here are some things I'd like to see in a GPS:
- Profiles. The Legend C is good for a wide variety of uses. I use it for cycling, driving and hiking. But when I'm doing one of those, there are specific settings that I want set on the unit. For example, when I'm cycling, I want the stats screen to show specific details. What would be nice is to configure different profiles that contain a series of settings grouped together. That way, I could easily switch between cycling and driving "profiles".
- Elevation profile display. My altitude data is fairly accurate because my GPS gets a fairly good view of the sky. I'd like to see the altitude profile that's available on the Vista.
- Percent grade. I'd like this displayed on the unit. Mostly so I don't feel so weak when I'm going up a hill at 6mph. At least I can see that the grade is 9%.
Now, what's up with the Garmin Edge units? They're cycling specific and the 305 includes an integrated heart rate monitor. But there are no maps. I don't get that.
I can appreciate that Garmin's business model has them making a lot of function-specific GPS units. That's a good thing. A lot of people probably want that, and I certainly want Garmin to stay in business. But, I also believe that there are others like me that want a more versatile GPS.
