Equipment / Repair Kit

Luck favors the well prepared.

A bike is just a mechanical contraption, and at some point, something's going to go wrong. I haven't ridden long enough to suffer worse than a flat tire, but it's just a matter of time. So, rather than hope for luck, I'm counting on being prepared.

That said, preparedness only goes so far. Short of bringing along a second bike, a repair kit is the best I can do. The basic repair kit that I keep tucked under my saddle contains the following:

  • Spare inner tube
  • Pair of tire levers
  • CO2 cartridge, 16g (2)
  • Microflate CO2 inflator
  • Mini tool kit with allen wrenches
  • Rubber patch kit
  • Rubber glove (chains are dirty)
  • Presta valve adapter
  • $5

This kit works for me on my rides around town. I figure if things go too wrong maybe I should just walk home.

Just to stack the deck, I usually ride with my wife, and her repair kit is packed the same as mine.
